We have just experienced the great privilege of sharing our journey with our daughter Brittany, and her boyfriend Mark. As parents (away from our children for 6 months) it was a very special time. Ministry ... sites of Haiti ... new friendships built ... along with the work that keeps us focussed were all part of the week long adventure. Britt said ... "no words could have prepared me for the experience of being here!"
We had many wonderful moments as we introduced them to Dessalines and the ministry we are involved in. Some of those moments included providing much needed food for the "The Sisters House" family; working alongside on the construction of the maternity ward; finishing doors at the Dental/Eye clinic; assisting in office organization at the hospital; caring for orphaned babies at EGO; participation in Christian marriage counselling; spending time reflecting on the mountain; learning Creole and certainly paramount ... experiencing the joys and hardships of life in Haiti along with their new friends!! They shared that their time here has forever changed their hearts, increased their compassion for those less fortunate and brought them to a new realization of how truly blessed we are! We are so thankful for the week spent together.
Now ... how do I transition from ministry moments to moving up? Well let me begin by saying, as we shared different aspects of our ministry with Britt and Mark, they clearly saw how the hospital has a vital role in the community by impacting lives physically, emotionally and spiritually. They also saw firsthand how the construction of the new maternity ward will be a huge asset to the people of the Artibonite Valley. With that said ... construction is MOVING UP! When you look at the work site you no longer see a huge hole for the septic tank ... the floors are poured and the walls for private, semi private, and washroom facilities are now overhead. The plumbing lines have been laid. The old depot, which will be the new post partum area, has holes knocked out for doors & windows and a poured concrete ceiling in place. The next steps will be joining the new to the old, installing windows & doors, and transitioning. The Haitian crew has worked extremely hard and diligently on this project and Burt is very proud to not only call them his co-workers but his friends! He enjoys community with them each and every day!
